Why might a child benefit from Therapeutic Life Story Work?
Why choose a therapeutic approach?
Children who have experienced trauma, neglect, abuse, loss, separation, or multiple care placements can struggle to understand their past and how it affects them today. Therapeutic Life Story Work (TLSW) provides a safe, structured process that helps children explore these experiences, answer difficult questions, and make sense of their journey.
Unlike traditional Life Story Work, which often focuses on recording events and creating a life story book, Therapeutic Life Story Work addresses the emotional impact of those experiences. It combines trauma-informed therapeutic techniques with life story work, helping children process painful memories safely rather than simply revisiting them.
Benefits of TLSW include:
• Developing a stronger sense of identity and belonging.
• Making sense of difficult experiences.
• Reducing feelings of shame, confusion and self-blame.
• Improving emotional regulation and resilience.
• Strengthening relationships with carers and professionals.
• Building confidence and hope for the future.

The therapeutic relationship is central to the process. Sessions are carefully paced to meet the child’s emotional needs, allowing them to explore their history without becoming overwhelmed. By understanding how past experiences influence thoughts, feelings and behaviours, children can begin to heal, develop healthier coping strategies, and create a more positive narrative about themselves and their future.
